Washing and Cleaning your Motorcycle Makes Sense

From keeping corrosion at bay to taking pride in your ride, there are several reasons as to why it makes sense to clean your motorcycle. Whether it's summer bug-squash or winter grit, cleaning your motorcycle is a necessity, not an option. Road dirt left untouched can cause paintwork damage. It can also attack soft materials such as aluminium and corrode wiring.

Before you begin, get-together your motorcycle cleaning products and any other items you will need. Never wash your motorcycle directly after a ride. The rapid change in temperature may cause damage. Wash the motorcycle in warm soapy water and rinse clean. Take care not to soak electric components. Pay particular attention when motorcycle engine cleaning as there are lots of hard-to-reach parts. Also avoid washing in direct sunlight, suds will dry quickly and leave streaks. If you have upturned exhausts, plug the ends and wash the wheels last using a good quality brush. After washing, dry the motorcycle with a blower or clean cloth paying particular attention to the dash and switchgear. Then apply a protective finish to paintwork and cycle parts. Finally, if you have washed off the protective coating on your chain, dry it off and re-lubricate. Use your cleaning time to check for chips in the paintwork, cracks in body panels and corrosion in frame joints or cycle parts. When finished, if you aren't wearing nitrile gloves, use a good quality hand cleaner to remove oil and grease. Regular washing and a motorcycle cleaning kit are essential to keep your motorcycle in tip-top shape, so take pride in your ride.
